I can heartily recommend the writings of Bob Roberts as a rich seam of sailing literature
which I'm sure that many TarBoarders would enjoy.
Roberts's approach to sailing was the opposite of 'yachting'. The late Des Sleightholme
wrote an account of crewing for Roberts for Classic Boat. In it he described his surprise
that the barge's binnacle was the place where the ship's dog liked to repose and the charts
had long been relegated to line the drawers. It seemed that Roberts navigated the East
Coast offshore waters by a combination of intuition and smell!
