Jock, I do agree with you about PD and ML, though reading it as I child I had no such problems and greatly enjoyed PD — just one of the penalties of growing up (old)?
Regarding Andrew's question, I cannot give a satisfactory answer because I have no idea whether he did or did not see settng off treasure-hunting in 1931 as being vaguely feasible. All I can manage, is to say that nothing that I have read suggests that he ever regarded PD as anything other than the 'wild yarn' or 'wild plot' that he had prepared his readers for in Swallowdale and the young Altounyans had suggested/asked for.
