I certainly agree that Beckfoot has a certain mystical attraction. Part of this derives from the fact that it has not been positively identified.
Peter H makes a good case for the location of Tent Lodge, for me the location is fine but the house less so. There was a B&W picture in one of Roger Wardale’s books that looked close, but perhaps not close enough.
Thanks to some fine statistical search work carried out by Ed Kiser on the frequency of occurrences of the principal lake district houses, we know that Beckfoot was mentioned 318 times, Holly Howe 216 times and Dixons 76 times. As Ed has pointed out, Beckfoot was not mentioned by name in SA.
Thus Beckfoot is mentioned 52% of all the house references and was a favourite of AR throughout the 12 books..
A personal hope is that a real Beckfoot exists somewhere and AR cut and pasted the house to its lake location. Perhaps a greater attraction if it is never located.
