In preparation for a potential article later this year, Ed Kiser has already kindly carried out a search for me on all lighting terms in the books.
Although I have not finished my analysis, I have found nothing positive to indicate definitely the type of pressurised lighting you describe although it was available commercially at this time. Also the pressurised principle was used in the primus stoves on the Fram.
Most houses had oil lamps of the non pressurised variety. These were heavy items to carry as not only was there the weight of the glass funnel and globe, but the bases were loaded with lead to provide stability.
Pressure lamps were considerably more expensive that their non pressure alternatives. This would be a matter of budgetary concern for many households.
