They, or rather their Thorium coated mantels, were also more delicate.

I took a couple of modern pressed-steel Tilley lamps with me to augment the installed gimballed oil lamp on several Norfolk Broads sailing holidays in the 1990s. On the whole they were not a success, one leaked air and needed frequent pumping, the other leaked paraffin and was a fire hazard.

Not so a magnificent brass Tilley Lamp employed in his hut by the Lock Keeper on Lock 99 on the Grand Union Canal in the 1960s. This was a magnificent beast and, from what I can remember, 100% reliable.
