As well as the Tilley pressure lamps using kerosene/paraffin, Coleman lamps used gasoline/petrol or a refined version of petrol ie “white spirit” (there was a different type of “white spirit” also). And I recall a museum reconstruction of a 19th century New Zealand pioneer cottage with lighting by white spirit reticulated in small-bore metal tubes from a central tank.

PS re candles; in CC Mrs Barrable says candles are OK in the cockpit but not in the cabin; Teasel uses batteries which Tom has to take to exchange for a recharged one. The Margoletta uses batteries for the wireless & record player, which Dick comments on; but presumably recharged by her engine?
