Would such a house have been more advanced than Beckfoot in 1933?
Maybe it was. It does depend on the date of electrification of Horning- and I've not been able to find that out in a simple way. But Pete's parents' house would have been in the village, while Beckfoot would have been some way from the nearest electrified town. So electrification might have reached Pete's mum, but not Mrs Blackett. After all, AR was very specific here. To be honest, though, I think he may have made a mistake. How likely is it that even if electricity had come to Horning, a boat builder would have been able to afford to get wired? Although, once connected, light would have been cheaper than oil lamps or candles.
