Although I remember taking the radio's accumulator to be recharged, my experience does not date back to pre-electric days. However, I suspect that electricity was not an option. The electric company would have a deal with the town to wire up all the houses on a given street. Even if you didn't use any electricity, you would have a fixed charge to pay each month for the installation. You might as well use it even if it meant installing lighting fittings and appliances. In the poorer households that would have been the landlord's job anyway.
The alternative for heating, cooking and lighting would be gas but Horning probably didn't have a gas-works. Heating would probably be by coal, coke or paraffin.
