I very much agree with Peter and Roger, and I am glad that these points have been raised. Although I started the thread on Beckfoot Lighting I do have misgivings – maybe there are limits of analysis beyond which we ought not to pass? AR, an irascible man at times, would probably have given short shrift to anyone at the time who queried the Holly Howe lighting. As Roger points out, he had a deadline to meet and a plot to maintain. As AR might have pointed out, he was writing stories, ie fiction, and what’s more he was writing stories mainly for children, not adult males 80 years later who have electronic access to sources of knowledge that AR could scarcely dream about. I agree with Peter Ceresole that detailed investigation is often fun and enjoyable but, dare I say it, there is such a thing as self-indulgence. Well . . . maybe we should draw the line at deliberately trying to catch AR out over details – when you think what a legacy he left us, do a few errors matter?
