I just wondered whether AR had any difficulties relating to German editions at that time?

Looking at Robert Thompson's guide to Ransome's children's books (on All Things Ransome at http://allthingsransome.net/literary/archildrensbooks/ransome.htm) it appears that SA was published by a German publisher in 1933, but it wasn't until 1948 that WH and WD were published, followed by SA again in 1966, SD in 1968, and ML in 1979.

Wayne Hammond's Bibliography might have more information, but it looks as though Ransome's work, thoroughly English in themes and attitude, might not have been what the publishers in Germany were eager for at that time.
