Duncan -

I like Belle Grange as a possible Beckfoot - more of that some other time. Allan Tarn is of course on the outflow from Coniston, very different from the Amazon River being a small tributary on the North West side of the Lake.

But there is another Octopus Lagoon possibility in this area, which I find convincing when I've canoed into it, and that is the mouth of Blelham Beck. This is just south of Pull Wyke Bay, and is formed by Bee Holme Island jutting out from the shore and thus creating quite a good Octopus Lagoon. It too is reed fringed, indeed the passageway between Bee Holme and the mainland is almost obscured by reeds. It's also about the right size - Pull Wyke is huge. You immediately feel cut off from the hustle of Windermere Lake.

It is in the right position on Windermere to fit in with the maps, and Evgenia's advice fits in too - have a look on Streetmap and Google Earth. This confirms your geographical approach! Of course, when SA was written AR sailed on Windermere and would know these little places - as in the (mini) secret harbour on Lily of the Valley Island.

Canoeing up the Blelham Beck makes me think of the (real) Amazon river. You get stuck after about 700 metres - maybe kayaks could get further.
