This is a fascinating find Rob.
The pictures the driver trying to reverse his car, shows how bad was the driving standard in pre test days. The steering lock may not have been good but the driver fails to position the wheels for maximum effect during the manoeuvre.
I still feel that Rattletrap is an amalgam between the two cars AR owned simultaneously, as postulated by David Hambleton, being the Trojan and the Clyno 13.
The crashing gears, artillery wheels and radiator shape are definitely more Clyno than Trojan.
AR liked his amalgam places and artefacts, especially in the earlier books. One can easily think of the Lake, Wild Cat Island, houseboat and probably Beckfoot and Swallowdale as examples.
