I suspect that any exaggeration was deliberate in order to enhance the drama of the moment rather than presenting a portrait. Another point to bear in mind is that there was some 'drawing down' to look as if Miss Nancy Blackett had a hand in the creation of the illustrations. Thus the proportion of the illustration, 'The houseboat's frozen in' differs from the decorative headpiece in Swallowdale drawn three-four years later.
Other examples can be found in CC where the plan of the Teasel looks just right (to me) while the illustration 'The launch was turning round' does not. The 'Flash' tailpiece looks about right, so does 'Sir Garnet by Wroxham Bridge', but 'It was the Margoletta' does not.
Regarding 'Goblin', 'Rescue at Sea' is in much better proportion.
When he came to designing the entirely fictional 'Death and Glory as a cabin boat, AR measured a lifeboat 21 ft long and carefully drew his preliminary sketch for'The Death and Glory inside and out' to scale — including a coot for comparison.
The decorations showing the 'Sea Bear' and 'Pterodactyl' do not seem to have excessive freeboard though the illustration 'Mr Jemmerling comes aboard' does.
i have always thought that when it came to the decorative pieces AR drew as well as he could, but approached the illustrations differently.
