In that case, may I further suggest that before reading The Elixir Tarboarders look at the circumstances in which it was written in the Autobiography and Brogan.
How Old Peter was put aside for some self indulgence; how he was far from well and losing blood from his piles; how he was envious of Hugh Walpole's facility in rapid creation and the purpose of the romance was to see if he could do the same.
I think that it is fair to say that both before and after The Elixir, AR's writing of fiction was a slow and measured business and so perhaps it can be seen to be a false start and interesting as such?
