Ah the thorny problems of remakes. If the works were tampered with, there would be distress among those who are familiar with the originals. But for those coming actross them for the first time they might well appear more relevant to the newcomer. (Heresy!)
I speak as one who came to Ransome through the infamous '63 BBC version. Perhaps I too would have been critical if I'd had prior access to the books. As it was I thoroughly enjoyed the production, was inspired to read the books and have been a lifetime fan ever since.
I have also come across several classics in a chopped up version which I have enjoyed, some I have since read in the original form, others, such as Gulliver's Travels have not encouraged me to go for the originals. As long as the originals are there to enjoy I don't suppose we can condemn any specificaly targeted derivatives.
(Duck down quick.)
