It seems that there were worse sins thank reading Enid Blyton at school.
I changed prep schools at the age of 8; I had achieved a reasonable reading standard (having read SA) at that age in spite of suffering from dyslexia (except it had not been invented then).
When I was asked what school text books I had used at my previous school. I said I had liked the books by Ronald Ridout for English. This caused some furore as apparently he was a Communist.
I really did not know what a Communist was at that age; perhaps my desk was stuffed with copies of Das Kapital?
In view of his Russian/Soviet experiences, I wonder what AR would have made of this.
A final irony, Ridout’s school books sold so well, he died a rich man.
