Those of us who are science fiction readers often have the same argument- we can't understand why modern children prefer J.K. Rowling and Scott Westerfeld to our beloved Heinlein and Norton. However, the reality is that today's world is different, and children will tend to prefer books that reflect their reality.
Blyton's books are formulaic, and a 40's/50's formula reads oddly to the modern eye. The same can be said for the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys that we US-ians grew up on.
SA doesn't have that formulaic feel- Ransome's genius in making adventure out of the every day keeps the books more readable- they are literature, not pot-boilers.
