One of the main reasons, I think, that Blyton's output became non-PC was that in her 'Noddy' series, for very young children, the golliwogs were often portrayed as the bad guys. The gollies were originaly based on characters from the old negro minstrel shows and were quite popular, as toys, untill sensitivities changed in the 1970's. I remember that there were attempts to replace the gollies with goblin characters, but the mud had stuck to Blyton's name and she was out of favour.
I did read one of her stories for older children, from the 'secret seven' series. It involved the children camping on an island, off the coast somewhere. Some nefarious foreign adults were using this, and a neighbouring small island, as a base for smuggling or spying. I forget which. I remember at 10 or 11 enjoying the adventure immensely it was pacey, exciting, easy to read, and no more unbeleivable than many other childrens stories. Biggles, Tarzan and the like.
Where AR raised the bar, of course, was to create plots which appeared to be within the range of everyday beleivability. Though many S & A adventures were beyond all likelihood for his avid readers.
