Girls'clothes in AR

This is a very minor and pedantic question, but like all such questions it's niggling at me. I can't get a handle on the girls' clothes. The Amazons wore knickerbockers - is there any difference between these and long shorts? I seem to remember that in the film, which I saw as a child, Susan wore a weird (to me) divided-skirt-thingy and Titty wore a dress. Would this have been the case always? And what about in WH where there is reference to wet stockings - are these long socks? They are worn by both sexes so surely aren't thigh high suspender jobs?. Also, the WH illustrations depict winter coats but are Susan, Titty & Dorothea wearing dresses and the Amazons knickerbockers underneath (at least until Nancy's sartorial requirements shifted towards the pyjama)? Wouldn't the exposed knee created by the knickerbocker/shorts/dresses be un peu chilly in the Artic? Or did the stockings go past the knee? Oh, the puzzlement. Enlighten me, older fans.
