The steering convention still being used on the Titanic was a hold-over from the days of the tiller. "Starboard your helm" literally meant push the tiller (or wheel) to starboard. This turns the rudder to port and steers the boat to the left.
I assume the direction to turn was based on the distance between the Titanic's course and the nearer edge of the iceberg. (Hitting the iceberg head on might have been survivable.) Today, mindful of the COLREGS, one would automatically turn to starboard in a head-on collision situation.
I've tried to find out what happened to the Titanic's lifeboats. They were last seen in a New York warehouse. Not long after that the Olympic, the Titanic's sister ship, was fitted with additional lifeboats. It is speculated that some of these originated on the Titanic.
