Thanks, Tom. That sounds entirely feasible and is probably what actually happened. I thought that maybe putting the engines in reverse and steering hard to starboard would have slewed the bows to port, thus accounting for the damage along the starboard side of Titanic. On a similar note, I watched a couple of documentaries on the sinking and couldn't help noticing errors. The first program showed the captain with only three braid rings on his sleeve, The date given for the sinking was 10th April 1912 instead of 15th April. The second one showed the British cable-laying ship Mackey Bennett crewed by AMERICAN sailors wearing the uniform of the 1940s. The Mackey Bennett was registered in London and her home port was Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was sent from Halifax at the request of the White Star line to pick up bodies from the Titanic. I don't go looking for errors, they just leap out at me. Why can't the producers do their research? The second program also showed the captain of the Mackey Bennett giving the coordinates to the navigator in degrees and decimals - e.g.41.45 degrees
I'm pretty sure in 1912 it would have been in degrees, minutes and seconds. Why can't they get it right??
