Kindle editions can easily be purchased and read on the iPhone, though not via the Kindle
or Amazon apps as Apple want all purchases routed through the iTunes store!.
I have the Kindle app on my iPhone and on my Macs, so it's easy to purchase Kindle editions via Amazon.com and they download to all my devices. Having said that, I certainly hope the publishers wake up and start publishing DRM-free stuff - which would keep actual customers from going through the idiocy that Jock described simply to be able to have the books on the device of their choice and with a single interface (rather than in my case iBooks, Google Books, Kindle, and at least two others!)
