For what it's worth, Chapman Piloting, the standard U.S. small boat handbook, insists that a "tackle" is pronounced "tay-kle." A tackle has two blocks each containing one or more sheaves which Chapman suggests are called "shivs." (I know what a shiv is and I wouldn't expect to find one on a small boat.)
As an ex-pat Brit I wonder whether these pronunciations are known in Britain. I've never heard them in the U.S.
