What a fantasticaly well resarched piece of work! I'm sure AR never put as much effort into selecting information from timetables for his plots.
I remember, as a child of 10, being sent by train with my 13 year old brother from Truro, in Cornwall, to Manchester. It was a through train, took most of the day and I loved it. At the time (1964)I found train journeys so exciting. The sounds, the smells, the organised and well staffed bustle, so different to the indifferent scramble one encounters now. Plus there was the chance to see the magnificent steam locos and rolling stock, and the traditional railway architecture, pre-modernisation, before it was replaced by concrete shelters.
Ah nostalgia, not what it used to be.
