Agree about the lack of cheese and also butter. Wartime margarine was often whale based.

My parents used to go to Soho and buy kosher margarine, and that's what we had for the duration of the war. Apparently it tasted better. I always liked it.

We bought a lot in Soho, from jewish shops. I was especially fond of soused chopped herring, and used to look forward to taking the bus into town with my dad, where we would get lunch at a counter, always including Jewish pickles.

It's easy to forget how truly awful much of London food was then; the bread was ghastly blotting paper so the sandwiches were dull. Nothing to do with the war, just lousy food. It's fascinating to see that you can get some of the best fast food in the world in England nowadays. And I don't mean McDonalds.
