I know this will drive some people up the wall, but I've always had half a thought that there is almost a hint of political values being revealed here... (I would stop far short of suggesting allegory): The birds work really hard to produce something of value and various villains seek to exploit them or alienate them; whether it be the "idle rich" Hullabaloos, the petty capitalist Owdon (who has much more pocket money than any of the coots but feels the need to raise more money through robbing nests) or the grand capitalist, Jemmerling. AR is contemptuous of the lot of them, much preferring the birds, the workers, traditional craftsmen, gentlemen adventurers and pirates.
