Oh my!!! Knickerbockers!!! Yes I am an American. I was reading Ransome in 1936 and beyond. As a matter of fact I waited at such a tender age for his next book to come out. This was all in Seattle Washington thanks to a libraian at the Seattle Public Library-Univerisity Branch. But the point of all this, I wore Nickers until I was at least 11--which would have put me in the 6th grade(American style)--(almost 1940) or there abouts. They were Nickers which came down just below the knees with a band that tightened at that point. One wore them with stockings that went up to the knees and boots that were either just above the ancles or about half way up on the shins. The change in boys dress was taking place at about that time . I remember I was the last to wear nickers. But in fact they were great wearing items for a number of reasons. When Ramsome mentions Knickers, he is not talking about SHORTS. Heaven Forbid!!!! Any other questions for all of you who did not live in the Ransome "era"?
