IANAL, but I expect it would depend on how they were originally copyrighted, and by whom. They were first published post-1922, so wouldn't have fallen out of copyright under the old terms (28 years, renewable for an additional 28), but could have benefited from the extended durations passed in 1964 if the copyright on the illustrations was renewed separately. If the publisher copyrighted, and renewed the copyright on, the first edition of SA as the presentation (writing plus illustrations), I expect they'd still be covered (which brings up the question of when or whether the AR illustrations were properly copyrighted, and by whom). If Ransome and Clifford Webb renewed the respective copyrights, again they should still be covered. If neither the publisher nor Clifford Webb renewed the copyright they may well be out of copyright. And what the state would be of the copyright in countries other than where the illustrations were originally published would be another really tangled question; I expect there's reciprocity now, but when did that begin?
