When I first encountered them I read them as I found them in the library. So I read Picts and Martyrs early on, which as it was the second last book in the series was not agood idea. There are references to Pidgeon Post and Swallowdale, and the appearance of the D's which is explained in Winter holiday. I could follow the story but it would have been better to have done them in order.

Missee Lee is an exeption as it has no cross-references as many of the other books do. It can be read in isolation.

Peter Duck is referred to in Swallowdale so logicaly it ought to be read first.

As a youngster it never occurred to me to view these two stories as separate from the other adventures. Even now I'm reluctant to pull them away from the rest of the canon on the grounds of believability.

All the books have their own flavour, I think AR experimented with different styles too. They can all be enjoyed on their own merits but keeping to the chronological framework enhances the overall experience.
