With the help of Ed Kiser, I have discovered more about the Dogs' versus Dog's anomaly in PM.
In the Cape 1st edition, almost all references are to Dogs'. However, chapter 4 title is Dog's - also at the top of every right-hand page. That could have been careless editing, but then, when they get to the hut, "somebody ... had painted ... THE DOG'S HOME". (Though Dogs' appears at the bottom of the same page 38.)
Yet in the table of contents at the front of the book, Chapter 4 is Dogs'.
Ed finds that all the US editions had ironed out the differences to uniform Dogs' .....
EXCEPT that the endpaper map has DOG'S and that has been carried through to every edition he has seen, US and right down to the 2005 Cape.
So it appears that Dogs' is correct, but it still hasn't completely won the field.
