I had wondered the same, because AR mentioned the elderly gentleman who used to like watching the changing seasons in his viewhouse. There's a little "turret" at Brantwood that had that purpose. It couldn't "be" the North Pole, but might have helped influence the idea.
The other option are the various "stations" that were erected around Windermere. Indeed the North Pole at the head of the Lake might have been on such a site, was it? The only one you can still see is near the ferry at Claife.
