I've suggested in Outlaw that Lake Bank waiting room, built by the Furness Railway at the south end of Coniston, if not a precise North Pole, makes a decent 'South Pole'. It is of course only just above the water level, and in fact sits partly over the water. However, AR would have known Lake Bank well, though his childhood visits were all in summer (?). Was there at some stage a flag arrangement to get the steamers to call?
