Was Missee Lee the inspiration for one of the greatest characters in the Flashman novels? Both ML and JCS are Oxbridge-educated classicists who somehow became brilliant, despotic leaders in professions where run-ins with the Royal Navy are an occupational hazard. They both bitterly regret that their academic careers were cut short and Latin remains their all-consuming passion. It would be interesting to know if GMF read ML to his children.
