I remember reading that AR had built a small steam engine whilst at school. Unfortunately cannot remember where I read this - biography?
This would probably have been a metal work project, with each member of the class making one. This still continues in schools, I think. I remember my son making a steam turbine around 1990. However I think by this time it was part of practical physics.
Tailpiece: my son bought the engine home to finish and I was able to improve it so that he had top marks for that project. (Homework was usually a teat of parents skills and abilities - unless you were a boarder (As was AR) - then it was a test of the boarding house repository a past questions and model answers that could be copied).
