The clincher is the 'line of sight' argument for me.

Steam Tractors, a lightweight traction engine, were sometimes referred to as 'Motor tractors'. I have seen this description cast into the smokebox door rings on some of them. As a type they were developed as a result of 'The heavy motor-car act (1905)' which allowed them to be one-man operated and to speed along at 5 mph, if they were less than 5 tons. They were limited to one trailer though, their bigger brothers were allowed to pull 3 and a water cart if required.

In those early days I think 'motor' was interchangeable with 'engine'.

Getting back to marine subjects. I remember talking to a tug captain in Falmouth a few years ago, and he much preferred the deisel powered tugs over the old steamers. 'They wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudd'n.' He complained.
