"A broad patch of clear sky showed overhead, and in it the larger stars.

Unfortunately, he also moved the stars around. The "saucepan" would have been low on the northern horizon, not overhead. I previously made this point in Mixed Moss as it implies a certain sloppiness on AR's part.
Fans of Beckfoot lighting might note two unhelpful references to it earlier in the same chapter.
