School uniform was resolutely made in those days. It could last and one was proud to wear it in the holidays.
I can remember going into the sea, when on holiday in Galway, to rescue my toy yacht that was making an escape bid for the Americas. Of course I was in my school uniform which was washed and dried out in the hotel afterwards. Shrinkage was unknown in school clothing in those days..

Perhaps because children grew out of it quickly, parents were keen to maximise the time worn before it became too small.

Worth noting, although not in S&A time, during and after the war in England clothing coupons restricted the amount of clothing that could be purchased.
