In the 'William' books by Richmal Crompton, the eponymous hero is a bit of a ragmuffin, though of the same class and vintage as the S,A's + D's. In the illustrations he is invariably clad in school garb including tie and cap. I do think it's what the youngstersf that era wore.

'Sauce-pan in the sky' comment. Maybe John got confused and saw ursa minor, which carries the same shape of stars but is about 1/2 the size of ursa major. It is in the opposite sector of the sky, so he didn't use it for navigation or he would have got completely lost.

Talking of stars, I'm sure Dick would have mourned the passing on of our great astronomer and TV presenter Patrick Moore. They were of comparable ages.
