As for religion in the Ransome books, when I was a small child the only children's books around the house were Sunday School prizes. One Christmas an aunt sent me The Picts and the Martyrs which had been published about seven years earlier. From its title I supposed it to be more of the same pious genre. When I finally got around to reading it I was pleasantly surprised to find that it described the adventures of real children who didn't drop to their knees to pray every fifteen minutes. As an adult I am grateful that religion plays no significant part in the series.
