My first AR book was WH, and it is inscribed "Summer 1948" in what I think is my father's writing (my fourth birthday was in May 1948). I remember being baffled by the depiction of the trestle under the upturned boat in the drawing "Is it for us?" opposite page 22.

I then collected them more or less in their correct order (SD is inscribed March 1949, and PP and WDMTGTS May 1950), and while on holiday in Felixstowe when I was seven or eight we travelled by bus to Chelmondiston and walked down the lane to Pin Mill, where Miss Powell was still living at Alma Cottage.

Alas, none of the covers has survived.

I should perhaps reintroduce myself as a regular and long-term reader of Tarboard but a very rare contributor!
