I agree, Ed. Certainly I received S&A at the age of 7 (which I still have as a rather battered volume - it also had to do duty as part of a fort and a pier for an overhead model railway among other uses) made me immediately feel at home with the novel.
My godmother, from the US, who purchased it had two sons about 6 years older than I, she had obviously found it had been well received by them.
She was always a source of interesting presents, I suspect that anything that had gone down well with her own sons also made a good present for me.
I always found Roger’s attitude to authority refreshing and it has sometimes guided me throughout my life with interesting results.
