The Big Six - But Not AR!

I received and e-mail today with the following subject line

All the 'big six' suppliers have now increased their prices - Compare now!

to do, of course, with gas and electricity prices in the UK.
But it set me wondering about the common usage of 'Big Six', has this spread from AR? Or is it someone involved was familiar with AR and thought it would make a good strapline?
