I thought Dorothea explains in the book that it was a play on the Big Four/Five of the real Scotland Yard?
from memory, something like this:
"Who are the big six?"
"It's the big five really, they sit in their cubbyholes at Scotland Yard and solve crimes"
"but why six?"
"Because there's only five of them but there's six of us"
That always seemed like a pretty solid explanation to me. Are the "big six" suppliers just the 6 major companies? Over here we have "The Big Three" [car companies] being GM, Ford and Chrysler that as far as I know was just a term coined when they were massive and nobody else came closer.
