I thought was an excellent piece too. Incidentally, if Ransome did have any romantic illusions about the Soviet Union, letters to his mother published in "Signalling From Mars" indicate that he had shed them by the outbreak of the Second World War.

Sept 18 1939:

Dec 31 1939:
"Our Ministry of Economic Warfare works in plain fact on behalf of the Communist International. All the damage they do to Germany takes Germany from such reason as she still has for thinking she has something left to defend from Revolution. Drive Germany economically to desperation and naturally you drive her Communist whether she will or not."
