"Thinly-disguised portrait" is definitely a bit much, although the Winter Holiday idea is an interesting one. I like the way "Winter Holiday as Russian Revolution" means Arthur Ransome ends up appearing in the story three times at least - he is Dorothea (romantically enthusiastic), Dick (a practical participant) and Captain Flint ("nothing but a beast of burden") And as for Peggy and Trotsky... ;-)
Seriously, I don't think AR went in for analogies really, although there might have been a subconscious or semi-conscious influence here and there, and the big red flag might have been a bit mischievous...
