A real 'can of worms' here.

Despite appearances the vast majority of what generally gets called the countryside in the UK is owned by someone. Over the years there has always been a strong belief by those that live in towns that the countryside is one big park that they are free to wander on, and when someone owns part of the land decides to restrict access voices are raised in dissent.

The easiest way for visitors who are not sure is always assume it is owned by someone.

I grew up in the country and remember the story a farmer friend of my parents told them - one day he found a family having a picnic in one of his wheat fields, so he asked them for there address, telling them he would come and picnic in their front garden! (this was in the 1960s)

As Jon says things were different in the 1930s, but then look at the Hullabaloos!
