Lots of the old people I knew had extra names. And not like the Peggy/Margaret and Bill/William derivatives; the extra names were not linked to their real names in any way.
Of course there's an old habit of attaching 'traditional' extra names to certain surnames- some of them very obvious, for instance all Whites were 'Chalky' Less obviously, all Clarkes were 'Nobby'. Millers were 'Dusty'- another obvious one.
