I have an uncle who is officially John but always known as Jack. However in recent years Jack has been one of the commonest names for baby boys to be registered with.
I think there's a general tendency for names which arise as contractions or familiar forms of another name, to come over time, possibly through ignorance, to be regarded as separate names.
