for me the books are a snapshot of life at the time they were written and any film ought to reflect that.
I agree about the books- it's one of the reasons that I like WDMTGTS so much, with its episodes of shore life and Jim absconding from hospital through a gloriously sunny everyday Ipswich.
But you have to remember that making a film is something else again; the amounts of money involved are seriously large and the makers have to make a judgement about how to recover their investment. Of course making a film also involves preference and passion- in this case I'm sure that somebody involved will be doing it for love of the books. But they have to make a judgement.
