I remember that - IIRC it was the third daughter (Martha?), who'd managed their summer move with stunning efficiency, forgetting only to pack her own clothes, who triggered the change. She was scrounging whatever clothes she could from anywhere and resolved to use her mother's "bathing costume", which made the outfits the girls were expected to wear look positively racy; she left off the outer layer(s), which should give you some idea of the progress that's been made since the 1890s. In Belles on Their Toes, which was the first of the two I encountered.
